Romania is a beautiful country situated
on the Black Sea and is bordered by the Ukraine, Hungary, Serbia and Bulgaria.
Of the country's 23 million people, about 90 percent claim to be Orthodox
Christians, most of them being "nominal" Christians in that they have some
identification with the church in marriage, baptism and funerals, but most
members would not claim to have a personal relationship with Christ.
After 45 years under communism, in December 1989, the
Romanian churches joined others throughout eastern Europe in an exultant
cry of freedom from the tyranny of oppression and persecution. Communism
had fallen; the church was finally free to worship and evangelize.
Romania is one of the least developed post-communist nations
economically, but recent changes in the government have given renewed hope
to the nation. The main goal of the Country is to enter in the European
Community and also in NATO.
The evangelical church is small, but is the strongest
one from the Eastern Europe and is poised for growth and greater impact
as they seek strategic ways to bring the good news of the gospel to Romanians.
Assistance is requested in many areas: training for church
leadership, training in evangelistic outreach, assistance and training
for social work and help with direction and vision to name a few.
For 50 years, Romanian Christians were really isolated
because of the Iron Curtain. The Communist government built up barriers
also between denominations. After Communism felt down, Romanian Christians
found themselves in the shade of very high walls, with fear for communication
over denominational, cultural and national barriers. Instead of unity they
found isolation.
After a hard and painful history, now Romania has a great
harvest and a great potential but less trained and visionary workers and
less resources. Our vision is to see Churches and Organizations from Western
Hemisphere coming alongside, sharing their experience, their potential
and their resources, to enable Romanians to do their job regarding The
Great Commission, and to show Christian love to orphans, handicapped persons,
street children, etc.
